Frequently Asked Questions
Will lessons resemble lectures taught in school?
Journalism is far from anything like an essay assignment — every article explores a completely new topic and there is so much more than just writing to journalism. At Camp MAC, campers get to experience every aspect of journalism, from news writing to sports writing to multimedia coverage. We will have many activities to teach the concepts in an engaging, memorable and (most importantly) fun way!
Where do the proceeds from the camp go?
Camp MAC is a non-profit summer camp that donates all of its proceeds to the Paly Media Arts Boosters, a booster program that funds the Media Arts Center. The booster program helps Paly's numerous publications stay in operation, as well as other programs such as video production, photography and graphic design.
Does my student need journalism experience to attend?
Not at all. Our goal is to spread exposure to journalism to younger students. If your student has an open mind and a willingness to learn different styles of writing and communication, they will gain journalistic experience very quickly!
What is the ratio of counselors to students?
We have estimated that the ratio will be roughly 3 students to 1 counselor, ensuring close attention and maximizing learning potential for your student. We will also have extra counselors who will not be a part of the direct teaching process who will monitor the camp to make sure it runs smoothly.
Is there a refund policy?
If you wish to opt out of the camp before June 1st, you will receive a full refund. There will be a half refund from June 2nd - July 15th. After July 15th, we unfortunately will be unable to refund any cancellations.
Can I receive financial aid?
We provide financial aid based on individual personal need. If you want to apply, contact Paul Kandell at pkandell@pausd.org to discuss the exact details of the financial aid.
Can I still participate if I am a returning camper?
Returning campers are welcome, but the curriculum will be similar to the previous year and returning campers will be taught alongside first-year campers.
